"Unidentified Network" - College Apartment, Wireless working, LAN not!
Hi all,
So I have been living in campus apartments for almost 2 years now, and have never had a problem connecting to the internet or the network. Up until last week, everything was fine. However one day during the week, the internet for the entire complex went
down. So we went without any internet for the rest of the day. Next afternoon, it came back (I'm guessing someone fixed it), and everyone was able to connect again.
Now I normally leave my Laptop in my room (I am sharing with another guy, and we both have ethernet ports under our desks) and connect using a cable. Most others who I have talked to use the wireless. I tried to use his cable port to connect and see what
happened and it worked. I went back to my own and tried and nothing. Then I tried his again and it was Unidentified Network.
My problem is, I keep getting the "Unidentified Network", no internet access thing. I have tried all sorts of fixes, from ipconfig /release and /renew to use the following IPv4 and setting it manually and netsh etc..
I am really stuck, and the killer is I can connect wirelessly to the network but not though the cable.

Do you have multihomed computer mwaning both wired and wireless enabled? Or post back with the result of ipconfig /all here.
Also these search results may help.

Your Ethernet port shows Media disconnected. Check the cable connection between your PC and your Ethernet drop. If both ends are plugged in securely, try a different cable. See if your roommate can connect to you ethernet drop. If he can't,
you have a bad ethernet drop.

Sounds like a faulty cable. Ensure you are connected to the plug socket securely and try alternating ethernet ports? Is the problem only with your room? Try connecting to adjacent rooms. If you can connect using the cable in other ports then its your port
which is bad.
